SmartStart delivers a simple, low cost solution for BMX athletes to develop efficient gate technique away from the track.
The app handles cadence and beep audio output, delay randomization and lights display while controlling power to the gate magnet using a simple Bluetooth relay switch.
Device Setup
Device Setup
Device setup is simple and intuitive.
Power on your Bluetooth relay switch and magnet
Launch the SmartStart app on your phone or tablet and navigate to the Devices screen
The app will automatically scan for available devices. Select the DSD device
The app will establish a Bluetooth connection to the relay and you can save the connected relay so that it connects automatically in future.
Remember to power on your relay before launching the app at subsequent training sessions

Hands free operation is straight forward
Navigate to the Repetitions screen
Select the number of gates you wish to perform
Set the delay between gates in minutes and/or seconds

Navigate to the Audio screen for granular control of audio output
Set the volume
Enable or disable the pre-cadence 'Attention' warning.
Choose the full UCI cadence or shorten the cadence, skipping 'Ok riders, random start' and starting at 'Riders ready, watch the gate'. This functionality allows coaches to interact with athletes closer to the gate drop when dealing with ingrained habits such as 'sinking' on the gate or ratcheting of the cranks.
Beep Control switches from the full four beeps to the first beep only and is intended to assist athletes with reaction time.

SmartStart works with readily available, low cost, off the shelf hardware and allows anyone with basic DIY skills to build a full functioning start gate. If you can build a wooden ramp and have access to an IOS or Android device, you can buy a magnet, DSD Bluetooth relay switch and 12v power supply from Amazon.
